김대실 박사가 제작한 여덟 번째 기록영화로서 상영시간 1시간 30분, 한국어와 영어 (영어자막).
해방 후 7세에 북에서 남하한 김대실 박사는 남한에서 6.25 전쟁을 겪고 미국에 유학, Boston University에서 종교학 박사 학위를 받은 후 Mount Holyoke College 교수, New York State Council on the Art의 Media Program Director 등을 거쳐 기록영화 제작자가 되었다.
김대실 박사가 제작한 작품 4.29 LA 폭동, 사할린의 코리안, 위안부, 큐바의 한인들 등은 PBS와 Sundance Channel을 통해 방영되었고 이들로 인해 다양한 상을 수상하였다.
김대실 박사는 70년만에 그의 고향땅을 찾아 북한을 방문하였으나 그의 고향은 어느 장소도, 어느 나라도 아닌 그가 만난 사람들 속에 있음을 체험하고 돌아온다. “People Are the Sky” (2015년) 기록영화는 최근세 한반도의 역사적, 정치적 변동 속에서 그 자신이 체험한 바를 기초로 한민족이 추구하는 미래를 그리고 있다.
금번 University of Washington의 초청으로 Seattle을 방문하게 된 김대실 박사는 한인사회를 위해 직접 그의 기록영화 “People Are the Sky”를 보여주고 이어서 질의응답 시간도 가질 예정이다. 불안한 조국의 현실 앞에서 관심 있는 분들의 많은 참여와 관람을 바란다.

"People Are the Sky" - Dai Sil Kim-Gibson's eighth and most personal film connects two ideas: the search for home and the nature of ordinary people.
Dr. Dai Sil Kim-Gibson is an independent filmmaker/writer, known for championing the compelling but neglected issues of human rights. The films made by Dr. Kim-Gibson include Sa-I-Gu (April 29); A Forgotten People: The Sakhalin Koreans; Silence Broken: Korean Comfort Women; Motherland: Cuba Korea USA. All of her films garnered many awards, including the Kodak Filmmaker Award, and were shown on PBS and the Sundance Channel.
Dr. Dai Sil Kim-Gibson was born in North Korea, crossed the 38th parallel in 1945, grew up in Seoul until she came to the US to study in 1962. She received Ph.D. in religion from Boston University and taught at Mount Holyoke College, then became Director, Media Program, New York State Council on the Art.
The view Dr. Kim-Gibson captures in "People Are the Sky" is unprecedented and at times startling as she weaves her own personal story with the history of the North and South Korean division and the conflicts between North Korea and the United States.
